Google is set to build a FJ$200 million (US$89.4m) data center in Fiji.
In a recent YouTube video with Vijay Narayan, deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica said Google connectivity brings "serious opportunities" for Fiji to become a regional hub for the Pacific.
Kamikamica said he cannot disclose where the facility will be built, but it will be in Fiji. Other specifications also have not been shared
He added that Google will build four more subsea cables connecting the island.
In August 2023, Fiji said it was in talks to build a second subsea cable. Now, the island will be joined by the Bulkula cable, connecting Fiji and Guam; the South Pacific Connect Interlink cable, connecting Fiji and French Polynesia; and the Tabua cable, connecting Australia, Fiji, and the US.
All three Google-owned cables will be ready for service by 2026. Details of the fourth Google cable are not known.
Prior to Google’s investment, Fiji only had one subsea cable: The US-Australia Southern Cross Next cable.
According to DataCenterMap, there are currently no hyperscale data centers in Fiji.
