Joseph Kava, Google's vice president of data centers, said: "Data centers like this one are truly critical for cloud and artificial intelligence. It is the advent of one of the most critical industrial revolutions that the world has seen."

Plans for the Council Bluffs data center were first announced in 2007. In 2012 and 2015, Google announced plans to expand, doing so again in 2023, and has since spent around $5.5 billion on the campus and others in the region/state.

Construction remains ongoing at the Council Bluffs site.

Governor Kim Reynolds puts the continued investment down to Iowa's "growth-friendly" business climate, as well as the state's efforts to ready students for careers in technology.

In addition to investing in the data center, Google is partnering with the Great Outdoors Foundation and donating more than a million dollars for clean water and food resiliency in the state.

Mayor Matt Walsh also noted that Google has previously provided laptops to Council Bluffs' public school students, and extended free WiFi to those who needed it to study at home.

According to Baxtel, Google currently has two data centers in Council Bluffs, one near Lake Manawa and another Southlands campus. Baxtel reports that the Southlands Council Bluff campus has four buildings with a total of 2.9 million sq ft (270,000 sqm).

In March 2024, Google was confirmed as being the company behind another data center campus in Iowa, this time in Cedar Rapids.

Besides Google, Microsoft has a significant presence in Iowa, centered around West Des Moines. Apple and Meta are also developing campuses in the state.
