The Green Grid (TGG) has released a new online tool to help companies pick the right cooling units in data centers.

Released this week, the CDU Sizing Tool helps data center designers, operators, and users select the right coolant distribution unit (CDU) for direct-to-chip liquid cooling systems in data centers.

The CDU Sizing Tool calculates the necessary fluid temperature, total flow rate, and total pressure drop across cold plates in a cooling loop.

The group said the tool serves as a preliminary guide to facilitate better understanding and communication between data center buyers and sellers, helping to reduce the learning curve and bridge knowledge gaps. For end users, the tool can estimate the appropriate CDU for their installation and provide recommendations to suppliers. For OEMs and integrators, the tool can accurately size and select a CDU to match their specific server designs.

TGG is an affiliate of the global tech association the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI). It also offers a Liquid Cooling TCO calculator for download.

"As the world’s demand for data centers continues to grow rapidly, it’s imperative their owners and operators make them as energy efficient as possible. This new online tool will provide critical information to help key decision makers select the best CDU size for servers in their data center, reducing the risk of installing excess capacity and thereby keeping energy use as efficient as possible,” said ITI VP of environment, sustainability, and regulatory policy, Chris Cleet.

The Green Grid was set up in 2006 and is best known for creating the PUE (power usage effectiveness) metric for efficiency. In 2019, TGG was taken over by the global tech association Information ITI.
