US data center operator HostDime has installed a solar plant at its data center in João Pessoa, Brazil.
The company said it has spent BRL 5.5 million ($1.17 million) developing a photovoltaic solar power plant in a rural area of the Pilar municipality in Paraíba.
For the first phase of development, more than 2,000 photovoltaic modules were installed over 12,000 sqm (130,100 sq ft) on a five-hectare site acquired by HostDime in northern Brazil.
With this project, the company intends to meet the entire current demand of its data center and a planned 30 percent expansion for 2022.
HostDime’s Paraíba data center in João Pessoa opened in 2017. The Tier III certified, 5.9MW facility spans 1,860 sqm (20,000 sq ft) across four stories and can support up to 250 racks.
“A data center is a big consumer of energy. Being able to convert 100 percent of this consumption to a clean and renewable source is a source of relief for the organization, as it is technology allied to sustainability. All of our own Data Centers will follow this standard as a means of contributing to a world that is more aware of its responsibilities,” said Filipe Mendes, CEO of HostDime.
HostDime currently operates two data centers in Brazil, the other is located in São Paulo. It owns and operates data centers in the US, India, Mexico and Brazil, and rents space in third-party facilities in Colombia, Hong Kong, and the UK.
