A new European data center player has launched in Spain.
Alternative asset manager ICG and investment firm Teras Capital last week announced the launching of Templus, a new €300 million ($326m) data center platform targeting Southern Europe.
Templus is reportedly aiming to create a network of 20 data centers. The company will begin with the five operational data centers that it has acquired, including locations in Madrid, Malaga, and Seville, with an installed capacity of 15MW.
The company is led by Nacho Velilla, former global vice president, and managing Director for Spain of Equinix and former president and cofounder of Spain DC, the Spanish National Data Centre Association.
Velilla said: “We are looking to democratize data and to bring data closer to individuals and companies, rather than putting the onus on people to move closer to the data.”
He continued: “The proximity of the data to the end user facilitates the digitization process and these facilities should not only be provided by companies that are located near large national or European hubs: any company should have the same digital opportunities regardless of where they operate. And if we can keep information closer to the users who need it, we will be more efficient, faster, and safer.”
On its website, Templus lists facilities in Madrid (10MW across 2,600 sqm); Malaga (2.8MW across 600 sqm); Sevilla (800kW across 370 sqm); Mallorca (500kW across 350 sqm); and Ceuta (1MW across 800 sqm).
ICG and Teras acquired the data center business of Spanish telco Avatel earlier this year. El Economista reports the Avatel portfolio, along with a data center acquired from Mapfe, make up Templus’ current data center network.
Velilla told DCD Spain that the company is targeting data centers between 2 and 10MW. He told Data Center Markets the company is also targeting facilities in Barcelona, Valencia, Zaragoza, and San Sebastián, and plans to expand to other European markets.
In October 2023 ICG acquired a portfolio of UK data centers leased to Vodafone. The company took over the properties – totaling 260,000 sq ft (24,155 sqm) across five data exchanges around London – from British Land for £125 million ($152.2m).
Teras has previously partnered with Asterion to acquire Spanish fiber firm Olivenet and Olin Group in 2022, and sold Chilean fiber unit Mundo Pacífico to DigitalBridge in 2021.
