According to a report from Reuters, which cited a source with "direct knowledge of the matter," the cause of the outage was a fire in one of Reliance's data centers. Specifics about the data center experiencing issues were not shared.

According to Downdetector, a site that monitors network outages, more than 10,000 customers reported that they were experiencing connectivity issues. Forty two percent of those said they had problems with their Mobile Internet, 41 percent with JioFiber, and 17 percent said they had no signal at all.

In a statement, Reliance said, “This morning some Jio customers in Mumbai faced problems in availing seamless services on account of minor technical issues. These have been resolved and seamless services of Jio have been fully restored. We regret the inconvenience to our subscribers.”

DCD has contacted Reliance Jio for more information about the cause of the outage, and which data center was affected.

Similar issues were experienced by Reliance Jio customers in June of this year, with reports citing problems with mobile Internet services, Jio Fiber, and other Jio services.

Earlier this month, Reliance Industries revealed it would be building a gigawatt-scale artificial intelligence (AI) data center in Jamnagar, in the Indian state of Gujarat.

Reliance Jio is the telecommunications business of Reliance Industries, and has around 489 million subscribers making it the largest provider in the country.

Reliance Industries, Brookfield Asset Management, and Digital Realty have a three-way data center joint venture, Digital Connexion.

Digital Connexion launched its first data center in Chennai in January 2024.
