UK colocation firm Liverpool City Region Data Centres (LCRDC) has launched a micro data center Edge location in Merseyside, UK.

The company recently announced it has launched the Bootle Triad Data Centre in Bootle, in the Sefton area of Liverpool.

The Triad is a shopping center that opened in 1974. The local council is developing the site.

“This new generation of small-scale data centers will help enable 5G applications, media streaming, driverless cars, drone deliveries, and the Internet of Things, especially with such data centers being installed deep within communities,” the company said.

LCRDC provides Edge, micro, and core colocation services from sites in Liverpool, Sefton, Knowsley, St Helens, and the Wirral.

It was founded late last year by Matt Wilson, who is also founder and CEO of Liverpool-based ISP Baltic Broadband and local fiber firm Mersey Fibre. LCRDC is part of Baltic Broadband.

On its website, LCRDC lists six micro data centers across Liverpool, including in the Liverpool One shopping complex (launched in May), the Lime Street & Bold Street corridor (March), Baltic Triangle (March) Paddington Village (February), and Kirkdale. Another is planned near Crosby this year, as well as an underground facility in the former moat of Liverpool Castle.

It also offers services from a larger, 6,800 sq ft (630 sqm) facility on the King Edward Industrial Estate in Liverpool that Baltic built nearly three years ago, as well as an Edge facility on the south side of Liverpool City center in the Baltic Triangle (launched in February and known as the Liverpool City Queen’s facility). It also offers services from Datum’s Manchester facility.

Wilson recently said the King Edward site was full.

“I’m really pleased to see we’ve sold the last rack space available and are now completely full and have had to establish a waiting list for customers needing space,” he posted on LinkedIn.

“Although we do have smaller data centers around the region, seeing our biggest facility maxed out is a great testament to the whole team at Baltic Broadband & LCRDC.”
