Meta (formerly known as Facebook) is to expand its Gallatin data center campus in Tennessee.
Plans for an expansion were first reported in the press in January 2022, but the company has officially announced the news this week.
“Today, we’re excited to announce that we are expanding Meta’s Gallatin Data Center campus with two new buildings, reaching more than 1.6 million square feet,” the company said in a post on Facebook. “This expansion brings our investment in Gallatin to nearly $1 billion and will increase our number of skilled trade workers on site at peak to 1700.”
Meta – then Facebook – first announced plans for an 800-acre Tennessee campus in 2020. DPR Construction recently celebrated the topping out of the first data center on the site. The campus is expected to come online in 2023.
While the company usually designs its data centers in an H-shape, renderings from the company suggest the new planned development will be a 4- or H-shape. Previous reports say the building will total 627,000 square feet (58,250 sqm) of data center space and 45,000 sq ft (4,180 sqm) of office space.
The social media giant last year signed a 110MW power purchase agreement (PPA) to procure solar energy for the Gallatin facility from 2023.
After a large expansion spree in 2021, 2022 has seen Meta announce plans to expand its DeKalb data center campus in Illinois and its New Albany campus in Ohio. The company has also announced new US data center sites in Idaho, Texas, and Kansas City, along with a new campus in Spain.
