The 715,000 sq ft (66,425 sqm) campus will "be part of our global infrastructure that helps bring our technologies and services to life,” the company announced this week.

Meta intends to invest more than $800 million in the 960-acre project, which it said will be optimized for AI workloads. Renderings suggest at least two buildings and on-site substations are planned; the buildings are not the traditional H design Meta has previously used.

Cowboy State Daily reports construction began months ago, but the project has been in the works since at least 2020.

Meta said Cheyenne "stood out" due to its access to infrastructure, talent pool, and community partners.

Facebook's parent company added that it will work with Black Hills Energy to add new resources to the grid, including renewables. It will also be partnering with Laramie County Conservation District to help restore Crow Creek, which serves Laramie County and recharges Wyoming’s Ogallala Aquifer.

A data center development on the site, dubbed ‘Project Cosmo’, was approved by Cheyenne City Council last November. At the time, Meta was using the shell company Goat Systems LLC to conduct business. The social media firm was named as the company behind the project in May.

Wyoming offers tax breaks for data center operators, which is said to have been a deciding factor in Meta pursuing the Cheyenne project. Plans to repeal the incentives were voted down by state politicians in 2021. Meta is investing heavily in its data centers, and expects to spend $35-$40bn on infrastructure projects this year.

Recent announcements from the company have included an $800 million data center planned for Montgomery, Alabama, which will go live in 2026. The company is also planning a project in Davenport, Iowa.
