Construction is underway at RWE’s 274MWac County Run Solar in Illinois and 100MWac Lafitte Solar in Louisiana – both are due live in late 2025.

Lafitte Solar, in Ouachita Parish, marks RWE’s first renewables project built in Louisiana - as well as Meta's first renewables investment there.

Andrew Flanagan, CEO of RWE Clean Energy, said: “RWE’s continued investment in the US renewables market is underpinned by new opportunities to partner with leading technology companies like Meta, which are driving demand for clean energy to support their operations.”

Urvi Parekh, head of renewable energy at Meta, added: “Partnering with renewable energy providers like RWE to bring new solar energy projects online is an important part of our approach to energy procurement. We are excited to scale our renewable energy contracts and this collaboration is an important demonstration of those efforts and our commitment to match 100 percent of the electricity use of our data centers and offices with renewable energy.”

German energy company RWE previously signed a 150MW solar PPA in the US with Meta in Tennessee in May 2021.

RWE has also signed a wind deal with Vodafone in Germany, and a wind PPA in Texas with Microsoft.

The tech giant Meta said its global operations have been 100 percent supported by renewable energy since 2020. The company has signed PPAs in the US with the likes of Adapture Renewables, Ørsted, rPlus Energies, Avangrid, DESRI, EDP, BP, SiliconRanch, Solarpack, and others.

In Illinois, Meta operates a data center campus at DeKalb, and has invested in two wind farms totaling 295MW. The company currently has no data center presence or other renewable investments in Louisiana.
