Microsoft has acquired more land for data center development outside Atlanta, Georgia.
Citing Fulton County property records, BizJournal reports the cloud company has purchased more than 136 acres for $52.5 million.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the land is near South Fulton Parkway, close to the company’s existing Palmetto campus and planned site in East Point.
Microsoft spokesperson told the AJC the latest property acquisition will support data center construction that is already underway in the south Atlanta region.
The company is developing sites on the outskirts of Atlanta, in East Point and Palmetto in Fulton County, and Douglasville, Douglas County.
Microsoft acquired the land in Palmetto in late 2020, saying at the time it planned to plans to build a 250,000 sq ft (23,225 sqm) data center. The company paid $6m to acquire 20 acres of land next to its existing data center campus there in February.
Microsoft gained approval for the $420 million Palmetto data center project in 2020. The company plans to finish the project by 2028 when it could span up to 116 acres, according to previous filings with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.
Last year, Microsoft acquired a 347-acre property in Rome, Georgia for a new data center campus. Rome is in northeast Georgia, close to the state border with Alabama, and around 70 miles from the state's existing data center hub in Atlanta.
According to a Microsoft community blog update from February, construction on the East Point site was set to restart that month. The company has changed the site plan, reducing the total number of buildings from three to two.
