Microsoft has broken ground on its data center project in Palmetto, Georgia.

Located outside of Atlanta in Fulton County, Microsoft this week announced that it began construction in April this year.

Construction is expected to be complete by the beginning of October 2025. Other specifications of the site have not yet been shared.

Microsoft first bought the Palmetto site in 2020 for the build of a 250,000 sq ft (23,200 sqm) data center. Earlier this year, the company bought an additional 20 acres of land next to the original plot for $6 million.

The tech giant said the second plot of land would support ongoing development at the original Palmetto site.

The Palmetto data center project could span up to 116 acres according to previous filings with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. The project also received a $14.5 million property tax break from Fulton County in 2020.

Microsoft is also developing two other projects on the outskirts of Atlanta; in East Point, Fulton County; and Douglasville, Douglas County.

All three projects will be part of Microsoft’s plans for a cloud region in Georgia - known as East US 3.

Last year Microsoft acquired a 347-acre property in Rome, Georgia for a new data center campus. Rome is in northeast Georgia, close to the state border with Alabama, and around 70 miles from the state's existing data center hub in Atlanta.

Atlanta is a major data center hub with operators including Microsoft, CoreSite, QTS, DataBank, Flexential, Switch, DC Blox, Edged Energy, Stack, T5, Vantage, and EdgeConneX.
