Launched in April this year, Modularity creates and develops undersea communication networks using prefabricated modular systems.

Modularity was founded by former Global Cloud Xchange CEO Bill Barney. Barney also founded Edge company Turbidite in 2023.

Prior to his appointment as CEO, Pennisi served as chief commercial officer at Guam Exchange. He has also held leadership roles as head of sales at Turbidite and VP of sales at Global Cloud Xchange.

“I am honored to join Modularity as CEO during this transformative time for our industry. I look forward to leading Modularity through its next phase as we deliver modular Edge data centers, subsea cable landings, and digital infrastructure solutions across the globe,“ said Pennisi.

The company said Chris will be responsible for overseeing Modularily’s strategic direction, operations, and expansion initiatives.

Modularity co-founder and chairman Barney said: "Chris' exceptional track record in sales and business development positions him perfectly to drive Modularity's next phase of growth and development.”

Alan Rand, co-founder and chief operating officer at Modularity, added: “Chris’ appointment marks an exciting chapter for Modularity as we chart our course forward in delivering innovative solutions for next-generation network deployments across emerging markets.”

Headquartered in Maryland, US, the company said it will commence initial strategic projects in locations across the Pacific Islands, Iceland, and the Middle East.

Turbidite, backed by Hong Kong property firm New World Development Company Limited, was looking to build a 3MW data center in Guam with eventual expansion to 10MW. However, Barney left the company last year and the company’s website has since gone dark.
