NextDC has opened the doors of its Adelaide data center in South Australia.

Dubbed A1 Adelaide, the facility has an IT capacity of 5MW across 3,000 sqm (32,000 sq ft) of IT space.

The Australian data center provider added that it is the city's first Tier IV certified data center, supporting AI workloads and providing access to more than 750 cloud and digital service providers.

Plans for the data center, located at 211 Pirie Street, were first announced in February 2022. At the time, DCD reported the build would see an investment of more than AU$100 million (US$72m).

Australian network fiber provider Vocus is collaborating with NextDC at the A1 facility. Other organizations such as Aussie Broadband, New Era Technology, GSL Networks, Sygnite, Unibeam, and Netvault, have also subscribed to being foundational partners at A1 Adelaide.

Craig Scroggie, CEO at NextDC, said: “A1 Adelaide, which is located in the heart of Adelaide’s central business district (CBD), offers high-density power, liquid cooling, and diverse connectivity, and will provide real-time responsiveness to mission-critical requirements for key South Australian industries such as aerospace, defense, and mining.”

The site had previously been used as a community space for beach volleyball until the South Australian government selected NextDC to take over the land.

Hon. Mr. Stephen Mullighan, South Australian treasurer, said that the new facility is a key advancement for South Australia’s digital economy and will provide numerous investment opportunities for local and global organizations.

The company operates or is developing 20 data centers across Australia, including in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Port Hedland, Canberra, the Sunshine Coast, and Darwin.

It has three more in development across New Zealand, Japan, and Malaysia.

Most recently, the operator launched its Darwin data center, also in collaboration with Vocus.
