First announced in 2021, work got underway on the Darwin facility last year. Located at 2 Harvey Street, the data center offers 7MW across 3,000 sqm of technical space and has capacity for 1,500 racks.

NextDC CEO Craig Scroggie said: “D1 will play a pivotal role in accelerated computing and represents the next step towards achieving national digital equity for the Northern Territory. This facility will enable organizations operating in the Northern Territory to embrace digital innovation and compete in new and dynamic growth markets across the APAC region.”

He continued: “The close proximity to Darwin’s CBD and direct access to major subsea cable infrastructure will enable real-time responsiveness to operational and mission-critical requirements across all sectors, including government, mining, resources, and defense industries.”

Aussie telco Vocus has partnered with NextDC for the D1 facility, integrating its Terabit Territory fiber network within the data center.

Vocus CEO, Ellie Sweeney, said: “D1 Darwin is a major data center in Australia’s north and enables the deployment of critical infrastructure which plays an integral role in expanding Vocus’ network coverage into new and dynamic growth markets.”

Sweeney said that connecting to Vocus’ Darwin-Jakarta-Singapore Cable (DJSC) submarine system will “unlock Darwin as a major new digital hub for the Asia-Pacific.”

NextDC has some 20 data centers in operation and development across Australia. It has three more in development across New Zealand, Japan, and Malaysia.
