NTT Communications (NTT Com) is launching its seventh Osaka data center in Japan this weekend, on December 1.

Located in Ibaraki, Osaka 7 Data Center (Osaka 7), the data center is within easy access of major cities including Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe. The first phase will offer 3,800 sq m of IT space and will eventually be expanded to 9,500 sq m and 4,200 racks to meet “surging” demand in the Kansai region, says NTT Com.

Osaka 7 will be a data center campus with a modular design to minimize construction time. Server rooms are cooled using wall-type air-conditioning that can accommodate high-powered servers that consume 20kW or more of power, including dedicated GPU systems.

The facility will be powered by an advanced high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system that NTT Com says will deliver assured reliability and lower power loss by some 20 percent compared to standard AC power feeding.

Elsewhere, Osaka 7 feature seismic-isolation design to minimize the impact on the building as well as customer equipment in the event of an earthquake, and is in an area where flooding is uncommon.

Japan is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is the most active earthquake belt in the world.

From February 2020, Osaka 7 customers will also be able to access NTT Com’s Nexcenter Connect metro service to securely connect to other NTT Com data centers in the Osaka region, said NTT Com in a statement.

Japan's data center business has been growing steadily at around 7 percent per annum, says NTT Com, and is valued at around 540 billion JPY (US$4.9 billion) in 2018.

Globally, NTT has rebranded its data center subsidiaries, to create a single entity, headquartered in London.
