Soccer team owner OL Groupe has selected the HPE GreenLake Edge-to-cloud platform to modernize its entire on-premises infrastructure.
The company owns the Olympe Lyonnais professional soccer club as well as its Groupama Stadium, located in Décines-Charpieu, which needs to be operated 365 days of the year. According to the company, the move to HPE GreenLake has been motivated by the need for improved availability, agility, security, resilience, and profitability.
"The continuation of our collaboration with HPE allows us to fully enter the concrete phase of our energy efficiency plan, with the objective of reducing our energy consumption by 20 percent while guaranteeing the continuation of our sports and entertainment activities," said Emmanuelle Sarrabay, deputy director general for finance and information systems and corporate legal affairs.
"The challenge is to deliver the best service and an optimized fan experience and we have full confidence in HPE's teams to help us achieve our goals with their expertise.”
HPE worked alongside CHEOPS Technology to integrate and design the on-premise technology platform. HPE GreenLake’s platform will be distributed across the two data centers hosted within the Groupama Stadium, and functions on a pay-per-use basis.
The Groupama Stadium, also known as Parc Olympique Lyonnais, is a 59,000-seat stadium. In 2016, the stadium boasted being one of the most connected stadiums in the world, with Orange providing a private WiFi network consisting of 500 WiFi routers, enabling up to 20,000 people to be simultaneously connected. Further information about the on-site data centers is not publicly available.
Part of the GreenLake service sees HPE deliver the hardware to its customers. OL Groupe will be able to manage its HPE Alletra cloud-native data infrastructure and HPE ProLiant high-performance general-purpose servers from a single cloud interface, while HPE will maintain the hardware and software throughout its lifecycle, with OL Groupe paying a monthly subscription fee.
OL Groupe hopes that the new platform will improve visitor safety in the stadium by improving the management of video surveillance and enabling a higher image resolution, elevate the experience during live events, and reduce the stadium's environmental impact through a significant reduction in energy cost and consumption.
According to HPE, the implementation of GreenLake has reduced OL Groupe’s energy cost by 50 percent, its footprint by 20 percent, and quadrupled the computing capacity of the stadium.

Currently implemented at the Groupama Stadium, OL Groupe is also looking to implement HPE GreenLake at its upcoming LDCL Arena, a 16,000-seat venue that will open in the last quarter of 2023.
