The Peace subsea cable has landed in the Maldives.
“Congratulations. Peace Cable System lands on the shores of Kulhudhuffushi in the Maldives Maldives branch cable installation is underway,” cable maker HMN Tech said on LinkedIn this week. “As an important digital infrastructure connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa, [the] Peace Cable system will closely interconnect the three continents and actively contribute to the arrival of global digital transformation.”
Telco Ooredoo's Maldives unit was the local landing partner for the cable.
The Huawei-made Peace cable initially launched in 2022, linking Marseilles in France to Egypt. Extensions to Pakistan and Kenya were completed in 2022, and to Singapore late last year.
Peace is operated by Hong Kong-based telecoms company PCCW Global and is 15,000km long (9,320m). The cable has a capacity of up to 96Tbps for the Pakistan-Egypt segment, and even more at 192Tbps for the Mediterranean segment from Egypt to France.
An extension of the cable to Tunisia landed in Bizerte earlier this month, again in partnership with Ooredoo's local unit.
Kulhudhuffushi is also the landing point for the domestic Dhiraagu Cable Network and Nationwide Submarine Cable Ooredoo Maldives (NaSCOM) cables.
