Power outages in Houston following Hurricane Beryl are partially disrupting services from a Lumen Technologies data center in Texas.

Lumen's Houston data center is currently relying on backup generators to provide services to its customers, reports Bloomberg.

Spokesperson Mark Molzen said that the power outages are not only impacting Lumen.

"The commercial power failure is impacting multiple companies in the area, including Lumen. We are maintaining partial service using generators and [are] working with the power company to resolve their issue.”

The data center impacted is a 51,300 sq ft (4,766 sqm) facility in the Greenspoint neighborhood of Houston.

Aside from the data center, more than two million homes and businesses have lost power after Beryl struck Texas on Monday. Beryl hit Houston as a Category 1 hurricane but has now been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone. At least seven people have died in the state as a result of the storm.

AccuWeather Inc. estimates that Beryl’s cost in the US, counting both damages and economic losses, could reach $28-32 billion.

A spokesperson for Lumen's power provider, CenterPoint Energy Inc., said it hasn’t heard specifically from any data centers asking to be re-energized and was working to find sites to add mobile generators.

Hurricane Beryl has also impacted Internet connectivity in Jamaica and Mexico as well as Houston, Texas. The latter saw its connectivity drop to 61 percent of normal levels following the storm.

Citing FCC data, RCR Wireless reports more than 1,335 cell tower sites were down across six counties affected by Beryl. The majority of those were down due to lack of commercial power.

Earlier this year, Lumen secured a $74m contract from the US Government Accountability Office to modernize its network, data, voice and video connectivity.

In April 2024, a disruption to Lumen's network contributed to a 911 outage which impacted South Dakota, Nebraska, and Nevada, meaning some residents couldn't reach the emergency services for a couple of hours.
