US data center firm Prime is expanding into Spain with plans for a 40MW facility in Madrid.

The company has acquired a 7.6-acre site at Calle de la Pedriza 1 in Alcobendas, close to Equinix, CyrusOne, and Data4 facilities.

The 40MW facility will span 26,000 sqm (280,000 sq ft). The company said the development timeline will be in line with customer demand, but the site has an estimated commencement of Q1 2025.

“With 44MW of take-up in 2023, power challenges limiting FLAPD markets, and information governance mandating in-country data center presence, it is clear that Madrid is poised for strong growth over the foreseeable future,” said Nicholas Laag, founder and CEO of Prime Data Centers. “Alcobendas is an ideal location for Prime’s first data center in Madrid with an established ecosystem that offers easy access to fiber and experienced, skilled labor.”

Prime's current portfolio is largely centered in the US around California, with campuses also in development in Chicago, Illinois; Dallas, Texas; and Phoenix, Arizona. The company announced plans to move into Europe last year with a three-building, 124MW campus in Saeby, in northern Denmark.

Rumours Prime was aiming to expand into Spain first surfaced in 2022.
