Reliance Industries is planning to build a gigawatt-scale artificial intelligence (AI) data center in Jamnagar, in the Indian state of Gujarat.

Reliance Jio chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani revealed the plans during Reliance's 47th annual general meeting, noting that the company is "committed to democratizing AI."

Ambani said of the project: “We plan to establish gigawatt-scale AI-ready data centers in Jamnagar, powered entirely by Reliance’s green energy, reflecting our commitment to sustainability and a greener future.

"By leveraging our expertise in infrastructure, networking, operations, software, and data and by collaborating with our global partners, our goal is to create the world’s lowest AI inferencing cost, right here in India. This will make AI applications in India more affordable than anywhere else, making AI accessible to all.”

A timeline or details about the project have yet to be shared.

Reliance is also planning to develop "Jio Brain," a suite of AI tools and a platform to streamline AI adoption. In addition, Reliance Jio is launching a Jio AI-Cloud Welcome Offer that will give Jio users up to 100 GB of free cloud storage.

“Jio Brain enables us to accelerate AI adoption across Jio, driving faster decisions, more accurate predictions, and better understanding of customer needs," Ambani said. "We are also starting to use Jio Brain to drive a similar transformation across other Reliance operating companies, and to fast-track their AI journey as well."

Reliance Jio is the telecommunications business of Reliance Industries.

Also part of the group is Digital Connexion, a three-way joint venture with Brookfield Asset Management and Digital Realty.

Digital Connexion launched its first data center in Chennai in January 2024. In April 2024 it was reported that Meta was looking at leasing the facility for its first Indian data center.
