Quantum computing firm Rigetti has made its Ankaa-2 system available via Amazon Web Services' (AWS) Amazon Braket offering.

“Today, we are excited to expand this commitment by onboarding the latest superconducting quantum processor from Rigetti Computing, the 84-qubit Ankaa-2 device, in the US West (N. California) Region,” Amazon said this week. “Furthermore, unlike other devices on Amazon Braket which can be limited in availability, Ankaa-2 can execute customer circuits throughout the day.”

Amazon said Ankaa-2 is the highest qubit-count gate-based quantum device available on Braket.

California-based Rigetti made Ankaa-2 available to customers via its own cloud service in December 2023.

While also developing its own quantum computers, Amazon is offering access to quantum systems from several companies through its cloud service. Unlike other AWS services, the hardware isn’t actually hosted within Amazon data centers; the quantum computers are hosted in their respective manufacturers’ labs/data centers and connected to the AWS platform via APIs.

Braket launched in the US in 2020, and was initially available from the Amazon's Virginia, California, and Oregon regions.

As well as offering access to its own quantum simulators, other quantum companies available through Braket include IonQ (via Amazon’s Virginia region), IQM (Sweden), and QuEra (Virginia).

Access to Rigetti systems was available via Braket at the launch of the service. Rigetti’s 80-qubit Aspen-M-1 system was added to the service in 2022.

D-Wave, OQC, and Xanadu were previously available but are no longer listed on Braket.

D-Wave, which launched on Braket in 2020, has instead been available through AWS Marketplace since late 2022. Xanadu retired the computer available via Braket in June 2023. Access to OQC’s Lucy system was previously available via Amazon’s London region in the UK, but access was removed in June 2024.

Braket came to the UK via its Eu-west-2 region in London in 2022, and launched in mainland Europe earlier this year.
