Rostelecom has signed a new data center service agreement with Russian Post and Russian gold mining company Petropavlovsk

The Russian telco has signed a RUB 13.5 billion ($184.3m), five-year contract with Russian Post to provide IT services. Rostelecom will serve 40,000 facilities including post offices, infrastructure, and data centers across the entire country.

As part of the agreement, Rostelecom is expected to increase the data transfer rate in each single network from 200 Gbps to 500 Gbps, as well as increase the number of postal facilities connected to the corporate data transmission network via fiber-optic by 10 percent.

“Our agreement with Rostelecom is unique, because it serves as a single contract for all postal facilities, which standardizes quality requirements for all communication services,” said Vladimir Savkin, Deputy General Director for Information Technology and Digital Services at Russian Post. “Thanks to this, we will receive the same high quality of connection across our entire network - in branches; logistics centers and data centers, depending on their geographic location.”

Valery Ermakov, the SVP for Corporate and Government Projects at Rostelecom, added: “This project marks the continuation of an effective partnership between Russian Post and Rostelecom, one that is unprecedented in the market.”

At the same time, the Russian Post has announced it is forming a new subsidiary known as Post Service that will be responsible for maintaining the company’s IT equipment and infrastructure.

“The creation of Mail Service will create more attractive conditions for IT professionals, as well as flexibly and quickly solve maintenance and repair tasks. In addition, we expect to significantly reduce the total cost of ownership of IT infrastructure and endpoints,” said Savkin.

Rostelecom has also signed a new agreement with JSC "MC" Petropavlovsk, one of the largest gold mining companies in Russia.

Under the agreement, Rostelecom will build fiber-optic communication lines the company’s gold mines. The telco will also provide data center services, create a unified VPN network and implement corporate telephony based on a virtual PBX.
