Russia’s largest mobile network operator MTS has opened a data center in Fyodorovskoye, 25km south of St Petersburg, Russia.

The data center has 16MW of potential capacity but can be expanded to 16MW. It has Tier III Design Certification from the Uptime Institute, promising reliable service to customers.

MTS (Mobile TeleSystems) runs Russia’s largest mobile network and has more than 100 million subscribers across the former Soviet republics. This is MTS's eleventh data center. It opened nine between 2007 and 2018 (three in Moscow, two in Nizhny Novgorod, and one each in Samara, Novosibirsk, Vladivostok, and Krasnodar) and in 2018, it acquired a partially-built 20MW facility in Moscow when it bought Avantzh LLC.

Uptime Institute lists two other MTS data centers with Tier certifications - one in Novosibirsk has a Tier III Design award, while one in Novgorod has a Tier III Design award, while each of its four modules has a Tier III Facility award.

Like the Novgorod facility, the St Petersburg data center is modular. It is aimed at corporate customers and state institutions, offering large capacities for storage, back-up services, and the opportunity to transfer IT-systems to the MTS's cloud services.   

The data center was built under a cooperation agreement between MTS and the regional government, reports TelecomPaper.

The company plans to build more module-based data centers in Novosibirsk, in the Primorye region, and in Southern Russia.
