According to Samsung, the duo has completed several rounds of tests at the company's lab to verify high-capacity and telco-grade performance using FDD bands and TDD Massive MIMO wide bands, while significantly reducing power consumption.

Samsung used its vRAN software integrated with AMD's Epyc 8004 processors, which is focused on telco and Intelligent Edge.

The South Korean vendor stated that during technical verification, the Epyc 8004 processors combined with Samsung’s vRAN solutions, "delivered optimized cell capacity per server as well as high power efficiency."

“This technical collaboration demonstrates Samsung’s commitment to delivering network flexibility and high performance for service providers by building a larger vRAN and Open RAN ecosystem,” said Henrik Jansson, VP and head of SI Business Group, networks business at Samsung Electronics.

“Samsung has been at the forefront of unleashing the full potential of 5G vRAN technology to meet rising demands, and we look forward to collaborating with industry leaders like AMD to provide operators the capabilities to transform their networks.”

Samsung has supported Verizon and Dish Wireless with their vRAN 5G rollout in the US.

Samsung supplied Dish with 24,000 5G Open-RAN compliant radios, plus 5G virtualized RAN (vRAN) software solutions.

Samsung has also provided its vRAN technology to Japanese telco KDDI across its OpenRAN (O-RAN)-compliant 5G Open Virtual Radio Access Network (Open vRAN) sites in Japan, and has also paired with Vodafone in the UK for its Open RAN deployment.
