Industrial real estate firm Segro has announced plans to build a data center and warehouse in Marseille, France.

First reported in DCmag, the facility is set to be located in the Actisud zone of the city.

The main building, which will host the data center, will span 23,000 sqm (250,000 sq ft) and will require a double underground electrical connection at 90kV with a length of 10km.

The first phase will entail the deconstruction and demolition of the existing site and the second phase includes the construction of the data center.

The mixed project currently violates town planning regulations, and the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur Regional Environmental Authority Mission (MRAe) has voiced concerns about the build.

Points of criticism include the planned height of 36m, when the maximum permitted under current regulations is 18m.

Segro is a large developer of industrial warehouse properties. Its data center footprint spans multiple facilities in the UK around Slough, just outside London.

Earlier this year, Segro raised $1.1 billion in a share issue to develop up to 24 data centers across the UK and Europe. The company got the green light to build three more data centers in Slough just last month.

Marseille is home to a number of deployed and upcoming subsea cables. Digital Realty has a number of data centers in the city and US provider Nautilus is planning one in the area. Phocea DC raised $5.4 million to develop a data center in the area earlier this year.
