Power management vendor Socomec has launched what it describes as a green power UPS (uninterruptible power supply).

The Modulys GP2.0, unveiled on July 8th, can be built in small independent increments and is scalable up to 600kW.

It is aimed at companies subject to unscheduled site upgrades and constantly changing power requirements.

The installed power of a single system can be increased up to 200kW by adding power modules in increments of 25kW.

The units have in-built redundancy so that extra modules can be added in-parallel.

Using this design principle, three parallel systems can be configured horizontally to achieve 600kW.

As each new power or battery module is plugged in, the system automatically self-configures to bring the new capacity online.

The Hot Swap function will simplify maintenance, Socomec claimed, keeping the mean time to repair to a minimum.

The rack-mounting design gives the UPS system flexibility, makes it easier to integrate with the existing IT infrastructure, the vendor claims, and can work with hot and cold aisle arrangements.

According to Socomec the design takes into account the constantly shifting requirements that data center managers face over building design, new equipment and power needs.

By making small units that can be aggregated, the end user can shape a system around the unique set up of each facility.

Andrew Wilkinson, Socomec’s regional MD said: “Our customers’ greatest challenges are over redundancy and future availability.

"The system is modular and the cabinet is free from electronic components, so potential failure modes have been eliminated and end-of-life criticality ceases to be an issue," Wilkinson said.

Additional redundancy can be achieved by introducing one more battery and power module which obviates the need for duplicated system hardware to achieve redundancy.

Rather than overspecify – and overspend - in order to guarantee that a system is futureproof, the Modulys range means that facilities managers can now scale as and when they need to, Wilkinson said.
