Swiss data center firm Green has broken ground on a new data center in Zurich.

Green this week announced the start of construction of its fourth data center on its Metro-Campus Zurich West.

The site in Lupfig, also the company's headquarters, will host 5,525 sqm (59,470 sq ft) of new data center space and 12MW of capacity. The new facility is set to launch in 2026.

The multi-story facility will use natural cooling (aka free-cooling) and feature solar panels. The Data Center Zurich West 4 will feed its waste heat into the new Naturenergie Eigenamt heating network, which is run by IBB Energie AG.

We are on the cusp of another wave of investment,” said Roger Süess, CEO of Green, adding: “With our investment program, we are once again doubling our data center capacities over the next two to three years. Modern and efficient data centers are crucial if companies want to be able to realistically implement a sustainable and future-proof digitalization.”

Founded in 1995, Green has four campuses in operation and development around the Zurich area. Launched in 2014, Zurich West was originally set to be built out to three facilities across 10,000 sqm (107,650 sq ft).

The company currently operates six data centers at four locations. Three more data centers are under construction in Dielsdorf and Lupfig.

The Zurich Metro campus will eventually span three buildings (M, N, and O) on a 46,000 sqm (495,150 sq ft) site: construction on the first data center – M – began in early 2021 and officially went into operation in January 2023. Work on the other two buildings started last year.

Zurich City is an underground facility the company acquired in 2016 offering 3,200 sqm (34,450 sq ft), and Zurich North is a two-story facility spanning 1,000 sqm (10,750 sq ft).

Green is owned by InfraVia Capital Partners, which acquired the company from Altice in 2017 for around $217 million. However, the investment firm is reportedly considering a sale of the data center company.
