Bitcoin miner TeraWulf has received approval for four additional buildings at its Lake Mariner Data Center campus in Somerset, New York state.

The preliminary site plan seems to suggest the next phase of construction will consist of two data center buildings - one with 50MW of capacity and the other with 20MW. The other two buildings will be for electrical switch gear or a dry cooler yard.

While currently planned for bitcoin mining, TeraWulf has said that the facilities may be converted into a high-performance computing and artificial intelligence data center, according to the Lockport Journal, which first reported the plans.

Thus far, the project has been approved by the planning board, but will still need full approval from the town board.

According to Jason Assad, spokesperson for TeraWulf, the additional buildings would take four to six months each to complete.

The company currently has 250MW of power allocation, the majority of which is hydropower provided by the New York Power Authority and the rest from NYSEG, but there is the potential for this to increase to 500MW.

Last month, TeraWulf completed construction of a fourth building at the site. That facility brought its total capacity to 185MW. The building uses static venting for cooling.

TeraWulf has been building out capacity at Lake Mariner since it raised $215m across two funding rounds in 2022. The company’s investors include actress Gwyneth Paltrow and other celebrities.

Earlier this month, TeraWulf revealed that it had paid off its remaining debt early, giving it greater flexibility to capitalize on increasing demand for AI technology.

TeraWulf is among a number of Bitcoin miners who are converting part of their infrastructure for AI workloads. These include Core Scientific, Hut 8, and Applied Digital, previously known as Applied Blockchain.
