US Department of Defense (DoD) CIO Teri Takai will be leaving her position of just over three years.

Takai submitted her resignation – effective May 3 – to secretary of defense Chuck Hagel, according to a DoD spokesperson.

Takai joined the DoD as CIO in November 2010 and since being in the position has been the principal advisor to secretary Hagel for information management, information technology and information assurance.

Last March Takai released a statement before the House Armed Services Committee on DoD IT and cyber operations.

Takai said an important aspect within the DoD’s joint information environment and joint force 2020 is the active consolidation of its numerous data centers.

The DoD published its Core Data Center Reference Architecture in October 2012 and provided the foundation for its data center consolidation efforts and the support of its cloud computing capability.

Takai said last March that significant progress was being made in data center consolidation and plans were in place in nearly 50% of all DoD facilities within the Future Years Defense Plan with remaining facilities transforming and conforming to standards.

Prior to working at the DoD, Takai was CIO for the State of California where she was responsible for advising the state governor on the strategic management and direction of IT during its modernization project.

Takai also managed more than 130 CIOs and 10,000 IT employees across California’s agencies, departments, boards, commissions and offices.

A DoD spokesman stated a replacement for Takai has not yet been named.
