Social media company TikTok is reportedly planning to lease space at the Echelon data center campus in Clondalkin for its new Irish data center.
The Sunday Business Post cites several sources that claim TikTok and parent company ByteDance will use the campus as its primary European data center when it opens.
The campus is set to open by the end of this year, with TikTok spending €420 million ($500m) on its facility.
The whole campus on the Clondalkin Industrial Estate supports up to 84MW, across 44,000 square meters (477,000 sq ft) of data center space. Echelon builds hyperscale data centers in Europe, and was recently granted planning approval to build a 100MW data center in County Wicklow, Ireland.
TikTok first announced its plans to build a data center in Ireland last year, following increasing privacy concerns and an escalating trade war between the US and China.
ByteDance has repeatedly claimed that user data was kept in data centers in the US and Singapore, but then-President Trump claimed that the Chinese company was sending data back to its homeland and said it posed a national security threat.
The president also unsuccessfully tried to force ByteDance to sell its US operations, with Walmart and Oracle close to sealing the deal.
But negotiations dragged on, as ByteDance fought the attempt in court. Then, when Trump lost the election, the forced spin-off fell apart.
TikTok is reportedly a major customer of Google Cloud for storage and was rumored to be the major customer lost by Alibaba's international cloud unit in its last earnings call.
