A cell tower in Janakkala, Finland, has been toppled by vandals.

As reported by YLE, the Elisa-owned tower collapsed in the early hours of Sunday (July 28).

The telco said that the incident led to disruption for its mobile phone network in areas of Hämeenlinna and Janakkala, impacting its 2G, 4G, and 5G services.

Both Elisa and the Häme Police Situation Center said the cables anchoring the tower were cut.

The police have opened an investigation into the incident.

According to the investigation lead, detective chief inspector Marko Mäkinen, there appeared to be no natural cause for the tower falling.

"Its supporting cables have been dealt with in such a way as to cause it to fall," said Mäkinen.

Vandalism to network infrastructure is not uncommon, as suspected copper thieves toppled a 488-foot rod cell tower in Oklahoma earlier this year, causing an estimated $500,000 in damage.

Last week, five Zimbabwe nationals were sentenced to 10 years in prison for the theft of solar batteries and copper cables in the Northern Cape, South Africa.
