Vocus will close a data center in the Melbourne central business district at the end of September, ahead of it being demolished to make room for a huge office complex.

The Australian telco said that it had made arrangements with customers to move to other facilities, and had offered the option of shifting to its two other data centers, or third-party sites.

The 4,000 square meter (43,000 sq ft) data center was originally built by Primus, which was then acquired by M2 in 2012, before that too was acquired by Vocus in 2016.

The facility at 55 King St in Melbourne CBD is in a building set to be demolished by landlord Charter Hall.

In its place, Charter will develop two large towers - one 34 stories, another 28. The $1.5 billion development will have 84,000 square meters (900,000 sq ft) of office area and 2,300 sq m (25,000 sq ft) of retail.

“We recognize this kind of change for customers means a lot of decisions need to be made and planning needs to take place, to move to a new environment or solution,” a Vocus spokesperson told CRN.

“As a result, we have continued to notify and offer support to customers through the process.”
