Vodacom Group is planning to cut 80 jobs in its home market of South Africa.

The telco said that the redundancies will be made across the business, and are being carried out to reduce costs, as reported by Bloomberg.

Vodacom currently employs around 5,400 people in South Africa.

"We routinely ensure that our business operations are fit for purpose as we transition from a telco to a leading technology company,” said a spokesman for Vodacom.

“Additionally, Vodacom South Africa continues to proactively implement various cost reduction measures to ensure sustainable operations and maintain financial resilience.”

Job cuts aren't a rarity in South Africa at present, with the country's mining industry slashing thousands of jobs this year.

The official jobless rate in the country currently sits at 32.1 percent.
