The telco used Nokia equipment to activate 5G in four cities in the Central Java Province: Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surakarta, and Pekalongam last year.

XL Axiata, which has more than 58 million subscribers, said it used Nokia's Airscale Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS), and Network Performance Improvement (NPI) program for the upgrades.

“We are committed to continuously developing solutions that empower service providers to provide improved capacity and customer experience," said Ozgur Erzincan, head of market unit – Indonesia, at Nokia.

"We are delighted that our solutions helped XL Axiata modernize the network and improve network capacity to ensure 5G readiness. XL Axiata is now able to ensure a better network experience for its subscribers.”

According to XL Axiata, the 5G infrastructure will be used by 5G application developers as a test bed.

The telco also revealed that it has signed an MoU with Nokia to deploy 5G Cloud RAN in the future.
