Two data centers are set to be built in Slough by hyperscale developer Yondr.

Last month, the company applied to build the facilities on the site of the former Uxbridge Road Gas Works and disused Akzo Nobel paint factory.

Referred to as part of London by the data center community, Slough is home to the UK's largest concentration of data centers.

The application for the two buildings was first spotted by local publication Slough & South Bucks Express, but the identity of the data center operator was not disclosed.

But a site by Yondr for potential clients and locals details its involvement in the L01 site. “They are the same project and we can’t disclose anything more at this point in time," the company told DCD in a statement.

Since January 2021, the company has been in design and planning consultation. It entered into a planning period in April, and said that - should approval be granted - it hopes to start work on the site in June.

The first phase of the 30MW facility is expected to be operational by January 2023.

Yondr said that it will lead to 1,000 temporary direct construction jobs, and 50 full-time roles once it is operational. The initial phase is expected to cost more than £450m ($637m).

Last month, Yondr said that it would spend $2bn on expanding into North and South America.

“Our data center campus size averages 150MW to meet large scale capacities - we are not a colocation player and don’t intend to be one. The markets we are looking at will be a combination of existing data center metros, with a goal of entering new markets as well,” a spokesperson told DCD at the time.
