During MWC Barcelona 2024, Sanjay Kumar Sainani, senior vice president and chief technology officer of Global Data Center Facility, Huawei Digital Power, delivered a keynote speech on 'SmartDC, powering the intelligent computing era forward', at Huawei Global Digital Power Forum 2024.

According to Sainani, the surge in intelligent computing power brings us into a new era and creates a huge demand for data centers. It raises higher requirements for reliability, density, evolution and TTM.

In response, Huawei SmartDC, with the approach of converged power, distributed cooling and prefabricated modular deployment, is compatible with high-density evolution, better resilience, better PUE, high reliability, higher scalability, and quick TTM.

Huawei SmartDC helps customers mitigate the uncertainty with large data adaptive to the intelligent computing era.

Integrated power system

The power system adopts an integrated design in ways that the power is supplied in one row and 18 cabinets are cut into 10 cabinets, reducing the footprint by 30 percent. In S-ECO mode, the full-link efficiency increases from 95.4 to 98.4 percent, achieving a 70 percent lower loss.

The iPower intelligent feature ensures that the full link is visible, manageable, and controllable. Through functions such as AI-based temperature prediction, assess circuit breaker health and set circuit breaker parameters in real time, the SLA failure rate drops by 38 percent.

On top of that, the lifespan of key components including fans and capacitors can be predicted one year in advance. This facilitates the shift from passive response to AI predictive maintenance, building a full-link efficient and reliable integrated power system.

Distributed cooling system

The cooling system maximizes the use of free cooling sources and requires only one heat exchange to save water and electricity, achieving a PUE down to 1.15 and a WUE as low as 0.6 (Ireland).

The distributed architecture and redundancy design ensure a smaller fault domain. That is, the failure of equipment does not affect the overall system running. The system availability reaches 99.9999 percent, achieving uninterrupted cooling.

For intelligent computing scenarios, the future-oriented air-liquid converged architecture is supported to meet smooth service upgrade needs.

Prefabricated deployment

Huawei's outdoor PowerPOD integrates ultra-high-density UPSs, highly safe lithium batteries, and containers with excellent physical protection performance to build a reliable prefabricated power supply and distribution solution that features the fusion of cooling and power systems.

Owing to the fully decoupled architecture of electromechanical engineering, the power system does not occupy the floor area, which maximizes computing space, thereby meeting high-density requirements for future evolution.

The solution is prefabricated and pre-commissioned in the factory and can be put into operation upon onsite connection. Shortened by over 40 percent, the delivery period meets the requirements for fast delivery and flexible capacity expansion. High-quality delivery is ensured through productized engineering, modular design, standardized manufacturing techniques, and quality control.

Going forward, Huawei Data Center Facility will continue to innovate and provide industry-leading data center products and solutions to help customers and partners build green and reliable infrastructure in the intelligent computing era, as part of its efforts to power the digital era forward.
