Ada Infrastructure has received the go-ahead for its 210MW data center campus in East London's Royal Docks in the UK.

Announced on June 20, the GLP-owned company was granted planning permission from the Newham Strategic Development Committee to develop one of London's largest data center campuses.

Jennifer Weitzel, president of Ada Infrastructure, said: “This new data center development embodies our commitment to driving positive change through the use of sustainable technology and materials, a robust environmental, health and safety program, and an ongoing investment in the communities in which we work and live.

"In addition to collaborating with local partners to provide job training and employment opportunities, the project’s future-ready design, including energy-efficient systems, net positive landscaping, and strict physical and cybersecurity protocols, will set new standards for safe and sustainable development in the age of AI.”

Ada Infrastructure was launched by APAC logistics real estate firm GLP Capital Partners (GCP) in September 2023, at the time with a planned 850MW data center pipeline.

Within that 850MW was the 210MW east London's Docklands campus, which Ada said would consist of three eight-story buildings and be ready for service in 2026.

A planning permission application from 2023 suggests that the campus would be on land at the former Allnex Paint Factory on North Woolwich Road in Silvertown, and that Ada seeks to develop a 64,245 sqm (691,530 sq ft) data center building (LCY01) and substation, with future plans to develop two more data center buildings totaling 142,170 sqm (1.53 million sq ft).

The latest update says that all three buildings will have an IT capacity of 70MW and will be designed to meet a BREEAM "Excellent" rating.

The facilities will be both liquid and air-cooled, and are expected to be "AI-ready" from day one.

Nick Cook, president of GCP Europe, added: “We are delighted to see our vision for a large-scale data center come to life at Docklands. We will continue to leverage our significant footprint across Europe to support the growth of our data center and clean energy strategies.”

East London is a popular location for data center development. In February 2024, Kao Data's investors were looking to develop a data center in the area. Other operators with data centers in East London and specifically in the docklands area include Telehouse, Equinix, Digital Realty, and Global Switch.
