APAC data center developer AirTrunk has begun work on a 70MW expansion to one of its campuses in Sydney, Australia.

The company this week announced it has commenced construction on the final two phases of its SYD2 campus.

Completion of the two-phase expansion is expected in 2024. The buildings will take the campus to 120MW.

AirTrunk said this was the company’s largest single expansion at any of its data centers.

First announced in 2019, the 4.2-hectare SYD2 first launched in March 2021. The company said the second phase of the campus launched in early 2023 but made no announcement at the time. At full build-out, it will offer 29,000 sqm (312,150 sq ft) of technical space across 24 data halls.

AirTrunk operates a second Sydney campus – known as SYD1 – which opened in 2017. The company finished the fifth and final building at the site in July 2022.

A third Sydney campus is in development. The campus will offer 320MW across nine phases, totaling 70,000 sqm (753,475 sq ft) of technical space across 42 data halls.

As well as the three Sydney sites, Macquarie-owned AirTrunk has another Australian campus in Melbourne, Victoria.

Last month saw AirTrunk complete a 20MW expansion at its MEL1 campus in Melbourne. The phase 4 expansion was completed in 33 weeks. The campus, launched in 2017, is scalable to 120MW.

The company also has campuses in operation and development in Hong Kong; Singapore; Tokyo, Japan (x2); and Johor, Malaysia.
