Equinix is planning to build a new 30MW+ data center on the Slough Trading Estate in Berkshire, outside London.
First reported by the Royal Borough Observer, the company filed for planning permission for LD14 late last year. The Slough planning commission met yesterday.
Update: the project was given unanimous backing by councilors.
Set on just under a hectare, the site currently consists of a single-story building known as Units 9-13 on Banbury Avenue that is set to be demolished by landowner Segro.
Filings suggest the company is seeking to develop a five-story, 15,100 square-meter (162,535 sq ft) facility, with two data halls per floor. The project will include 13 2.8MW emergency diesel generators, with one kept as a secondary backup, and an on-site substation.
Equinix’s LD7-1 building is also located on Banbury Avenue. A second building, LD7-2, is under development next door to Units 9-13. The company’s LD4, 5, 6, 10, 11x, and 13x data centers are all also located nearby in Slough.
Slough is a major data center hub, with Segro’s trading estate hosting a large number of operators. The likes of Virtus, Kao, Cyxtera, CyrusOne, and Iron Mountain are also present in the area, with KKR’s GTR and Yondr also developing in the area.
The former Akzo Nobel paint factory and research and development facility on Wexham Road is also likely to become a data center in the future.
Established players such as Vantage, Colt, Global Switch, and CorScale are developing new facilities in and around London, while NTT and Telehouse launched new facilities last year.
Other developers are proposing facilities in London’s Docklands, Havering, Loughton, and Belvedere.
