A fire broke out at a carrier hotel data center in Chicago, Illinois.
CBS reports firefighters attended an incident at 350 East Cermak Road Thursday afternoon.
The publication said there were reports of a carpet fire in the building and on the roof. Firefighters were seen on the roof and the fire was said to be extinguished quickly.
Chicago-based software engineer Eric Tendian posted what he said were a series of Chicago scanner updates to X, suggesting the site was switched to backup generators and that there were no injuries.
The building is owned by Digital Realty, which operates it as its ORD10 data center. The eight-story building totals more than 105,000 sqm (1.1 million sq ft) and offers some 100MW.
Known as one of the largest carrier hotels in the world, the likes of Equinix, Centersqaure, Colocation America, and ColoHouse are also present in the building.
DCD has reached out to Digital, Equinix, Centersquare, and ColoHouse for more information. None of the companies have publicly posted any information about a fire at the site. We will update if we hear more.
Update: A spokesperson for ColoHouse confirmed there was an incident involving a fire on the roof of the building.
The incident occurred during a routine generator test; hot smoke on the roof led to some roof debris catching fire. No customers were affected and there was reportedly minimal damage done to the roof.
"The engineering team at 350 East Cermak Road reports that all customer loads remain supported and stable. Temporary repairs were made to the roof and the cleanup crew has removed all of the water from building. Vendors will be on site this morning to continue assessment and repairs."
A spokesperson for Digital Realty also confirmed that there was a "minor" fire yesterday on the roof at 350 Cermak Rd. in Chicago, and reports of a carpet fire inside the data center are "unfounded."
"Thanks to the quick response of the Chicago Fire Department, the fire was extinguished with minimal damage. No injuries were reported," the spokesperson said. "We had no downtime in the data center. No customers were impacted, and the Fire Department did not order a mandatory evacuation."
Original story resumes: Originally known as the RR Donnelley Printing Plant and today called the Lakeside Technology Center, the property was built between 1912 and 1929 to house the operations of the RR Donnelley printing company. Closed in 1993, the site was relaunched as a carrier hotel in 1999.
