Goodman Group has committed to developing 1GW of data center capacity in Tsukuba City, Japan.
The company has also started construction of a new 50MW data center in Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong.
Goodman has entered into agreements that will see a 1GW data center campus developed in Japan. The first data center, a 50MW facility, is already underway with site preparation and infrastructure works ongoing.
That data center is expected to be completed in 2026, and Goodman has already entered into a Heads of Agreement to construct and lease it to a customer.
The data center campus will be housed on 45 hectares of land in Tsukuba City - around 50km from Tokyo - which Goodman acquired from the local government in 2022. In the time since, the company has been working with power, water, and communications organizations to get the site ready for development.
This is not the company's first significant campus in Japan. Goodman Business Park in Inzai, Chiba, Greater Tokyo, is home to more than 300MW of data center developments.
In addition to the planned development in Japan, Goodman has started works on a 50MW data center in Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong.
The company has executed construction contracts to convert an existing industrial building - the Goodman Texaco Centre - into a data center. Also expected to be completed in 2026, this data center will see Goodman's total IT portfolio in Hong Kong reach 392MW.
Paul McGarry, head of Asia at Goodman Group, said: "Tsuen Wan is a highly sought-after availability zone, and a key focus location for us since 2014, when we acquired an end-of-life, industrial property. Since then, we have been regenerating the site into the 225 MW Tsuen Wan West data center campus. Together with the redevelopment of the old Goodman Texaco Centre warehouse, we are demonstrating how we are increasing the value of our existing portfolio through the development of data centers."
Alongside these data center developments, Goodman has opened a regional office in Singapore. This office will be headed by Hugh Baggie as managing director of data centers for Asia, reporting to Paul McGarry, head of Asia.
According to Goodman's CEO, as of November 2023 the company had 3.7GW of secured or potential power within its portfolio. Goodman is an integrated property group with operations throughout Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Europe, the UK, and the Americas.
In the past 15 years, Goodman has delivered 600MW of powered sites and powered shell projects. In April 2023, the company announced plans for a 100MW powered shell in Frankfurt, Germany.
