Huawei is reportedly considering a cloud region in Vietnam when the time is right.

Dao Quang Vinh, director of Huawei Vietnam Solutions told VietnamNet that, with the demand for cloud computing services in Vietnam growing, the company would consider building a data center there.

"The demand for cloud computing services in Vietnam is increasing not only from end users but also from telecommunications providers and large IT companies, all of which are making significant investments in computing infrastructure," said Vinh.

Vinh added: "When the market demand reaches a certain threshold, Huawei will build a data center."

Thus far, Huawei has built data centers in Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines in Southeast Asia. While clearly open to the possibility of developing in Vietnam in the future, the cost of building a data center means that demand will need to justify it before Huawei makes a move into the country.

A report by Viettel in early 2024 estimated that the Vietnamese cloud computing service market would surpass $1.2 billion by 2030, maintaining an annual growth rate of 11-12 percent.

Despite this, the country does not see the same data center demand as neighboring Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

In May 2024, STT GDC announced that it was planning a 60MW data center in Tan Thuan, Vietnam, and took over operations of another in Ho Chi Minh City. That month also saw Alibaba share that it would be building a data center in the country.

According to Data Center Map, Vietnam has 22 data centers across three markets: Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Da Nang. Operators include FPT Telecom, NTT GDC, Telehouse, Global Data Service, VNPT Data, Viettel, and CMC Telecom among others.

Earlier this year Huawei launched a cloud region in Egypt with Orange.
