Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) has this week confirmed that a cable cut in the ACE (Africa Coast to Europe) subsea cable has caused Internet disruption.

In a post on social media two days ago (August 21), LTA stated that engineers are working to restore services.

"Preliminary investigations indicate a cable cut on the Segment 3 route, which serves South Africa, Accra, São Tomé, and other countries including ours," said LTA in a statement.

The regulator added that engineers have been working through the night to fix the issue. It noted that some service providers, including Lonestar Cell MTN have been heavily affected.

The ACE subsea cable is the only subsea cable that connects to Liberia.

ACE is 17,000km in length and runs from Penmarch, France, to Duynefontein, South Africa along the Western coast of Africa, via Portugal.

Liberia becomes the latest African country to suffer from Internet disruption this year, following outages in both Eastern and Western parts of the continent in separate incidents.

Both of those widespread outages were impacted following cuts to subsea cables.
