Local press, including Moneycontrol, report the Facebook owner is evaluating its first data center in India to cater to growing demand in the area.

"Meta is evaluating deploying a small data center. It could be a cache-focussed 10-20MW data center," a person familiar with the matter told Moneycontrol.

The social networking firm is reportedly expected to start a feasibility study in the first quarter of 2024.

Further details weren’t shared.

Part of Meta's growing capacity demands in the country is down to its Reels video product. TikTok, which Reels is competing with elsewhere, is banned in India.

India banned TikTok and 100-plus other Chinese apps in June 2020, citing national security concerns.

Reels – Meta’s short-form video product available through Facebook and Instagram – launched in 2020 on Instagram and 2021 on Facebook.

Meta’s only APAC data center is currently located in Singapore. The company has multiple campuses in operation and development in the US and several in Europe.
