The National Communications Authority of Somalia (NCA) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) have partnered to discuss new regulations for submarine cables in Somalia.

At a workshop held in Nairobi, Kenya, the two organizations discussed regulatory frameworks to improve the nation’s connectivity.

The new framework will address licensing for submarine cables, environmental impact considerations, and promote competition in the telecommunications sector.

Ambassador Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle said Somalia’s private sector had played a key role in the nation’s recovery after decades of conflict.

The NCA added that collaboration between private stakeholders and regulators would be crucial for the development of the country’s telecoms sector.

Currently, the 2Africa, DARE 1, EASSy, G2A, and Peace cables land in Somalia.

Somalia's network infrastructure has suffered in recent years, amid decades of civil war. Hormuud has previously blamed the Somali militant group Al-Shabab for deliberately destroying telecoms infrastructure.
