Orange has launched its 5G mobile technology pilot phase in Sierra Leone.
The operator revealed that it is trialing the technology in the central business district of Freetown, the country's capital, as reported by Comms Update.
"This launch is indeed a milestone for Sierra Leone. I am delighted that Orange Sierra Leone is taking the lead in setting the basic technology standard for 5G by deploying this cutting-edge pilot phase across our network, in line with the company’s vision to become a leading mobile internet service provider," said Sekou Drame, CEO of Sonatel, the parent company of Orange Sierra Leone.
Orange noted that its trials aim to test some 5G use cases in order to increase the speed of fixed wireless access and mobile broadband.
5G services have yet to launch in Sierra Leone.
Orange has been operating in Sierra Leone since 2017 when it acquired Airtel Sierra Leone, along with Senegal-based partner Sonatel.
Orange launched 5G trials in the Democratic Republic of Congo back in June, and previously launched 5G services in Botswana last November.
