ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) has formed a joint venture (JV) with Basis Bay, a green data center provider, for the development and operation of data centers in Kuala Lumpur and Cyberjaya in Malaysia.
The JV's first data center campus will be in Cyberjaya, around 30km from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, and will feature two buildings on over three acres of land. The campus will have around 20MW of IT capacity.
The first building will be named Cyberjaya DC.2 and will focus on serving the financial sector, government agencies and other mission-critical sectors. The data center will be ready for service in 2024.
The second building, STT Kuala Lumpur 1, will serve hyperscalers. Construction will begin in the next few months and should be completed by 2025.
The JV is a domestic direct investments-foreign direct investment partnership, with Basis Bay providing the domestic side. Basis Bay provides colocation and managed data center services from two data centers in Malaysia: one in Glenmarie and the other in Cyberjaya.
"This partnership is strategically positioned to meet the volume and scale requirements of hyperscalers while simultaneously delivering the premium, super-high availability needs of financial institutions and the like," said Dato' Praba Thiagarajah, executive chairman of Basis Bay. "This partnership will also emphasize the much-needed local participation and control, thus addressing data sovereignty concerns. Basis Bay provides premium cloud services and will continue to be a service provider of data center services tailored for financial institutions."

The joint venture is supported by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC). MDEC's mandate is to expand the country's digital economy.
The last couple of months have seen significant developments in the data center industry in Malaysia. In September, EdgeConneX announced plans for a 200MW campus in Cyberjaya. The following month, NTT launched a 7MW data center in Cyberjaya, the company's sixth in the city; PDG began work on its 150MW campus in Johor; and Infinaxis broke ground on its 12MW data center in Cyberjaya.
STT GDC is a Singapore-based data center operator. The company has data centers in Singapore, the UK, Germany, India, Thailand, South Korea, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, and Malaysia.
