PTT Telekomuniskasi Indonesia International (Telin) has broken ground on the cable landing station at Pantai Mutiara in Jakarta, Indonesia.

First reported in Developing Telecoms, the landing station will receive the Bifrost cable system, set to run between North America and Southeast Asia.

The 20,000km Bifrost system has been under construction since 2021 and is being developed in a partnership between Telin, Keppel Telecommunications and Transportation, Meta, and Amazon.

The cable has a designed capacity of 10.4Tbps and will land at eight landing points in Alupang, Guam; Jakarta, Indonesia; Manado, Indonesia; Rosarito, Mexico; Davao, the Philippines; Tuas, Singapore; California, US; and Oregon, US.

Bogi Witjaksono, director of wholesale and international services at Telin, said the cable landing station is unique as it will also connect to Indonesia’s existing international gateway in Batam.

Budi Satria D.Purba, CEO at Telin, added: “With the Bifrost cable system from Manado (Indonesia) landing at this Jakarta cable landing station, Indonesia now has a second gateway, enhancing global connectivity and regional integration.”

The Bifrost cable was scheduled to be operational by Q2 2024, but has been pushed back to early 2025.

Telin is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Telkom Indonesia. Telkom and Telin operate data centers in both Batam and Singapore. Singtel, which operates a number of data centers in Singapore, is partnering with Telkom to develop a data center in Batam.

Singtel and Telin announced plans to build a new subsea cable between Singapore and Indonesia earlier this month, set to go live in Q4 2026.

Telin also said it would partner with BW Digital on the Hawaiki Nui subsea system. The operator has more than 250,140km of cable system length and more than 19 data centers across the APAC region.

Jakarta is currently home to the B2JS, INDIGO-West, Indonesia Global Gateway, B3JS, JaSuKa, and Matrix cable systems. The Asia Connect Cable-1 and Hawaiki Nui 1 cables are expected to land in Jakarta in 2027.
