V.tal has inaugurated its second Edge data center in Barranquilla, Colombia.

The company, which owns fiber and data centers across Latin America, launched the facility this month.

Known as BDC2, the new facility offers 3MW and capacity for up to 200 racks. V.tal invested more than $20 million into the project.

The facility is located alongside the company's existing BDC1 facility, which offers 1MW and space for 80 racks.

“Barranquilla is the city where Colombia exchanges data with the world and, therefore, consolidates itself as a strategic place to choose a data center,” said Fábio Laguado, director of Latam and USA Sales at V.tal “At BDC2 we will offer colocation services, interconnection with content and cloud providers and other clients to exchange traffic, as well as access to all the services offered by V.tal in its terrestrial and submarine fiber optic network.”

Trans Americas Fiber System is listed as a customer of the new facility. It will be landing its TAM-1 submarine fiber optic system in Barranquilla.

TAM-1 will connect Colombia with at least 10 countries in its first phase, covering more than 7,000 km across the region. It is due to start service during the second half of 2025.

Plans for a data center in Barranquilla were first announced by GlobeNet back in September 2021.

Owned by BTG Pactual Infrastructure Fund II, GlobeNet was a wholesale telecom operator that owned a number of submarine cables in Latin America as well as Cable Landing Stations in Brazil, Colombia, and the US in New Jersey and Florida.

GlobeNet was eventually merged with V.tal – Oi’s fiber-optic infrastructure assets unit – after BTG acquired a majority stake in the company.

In Brazil, V.tal currently has three Edge data centers in operation; two in Fortaleza, and one in Rio de Janeiro. The company is also planning a new facility in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul.
